gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

insert at the bottom
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 enable_msi=1

Reboot and test.

Other models to test are:
thinkpad
ideapad
hp_laptop
dell-vostro
olpc-xo-1_5

Adjust alsamixer
